Four days ago a family member told me about this new iPhone game called Contre Jour, so I checked it out. It was a 69p game made by our buddies at Chillingo (Angry Birds, Cut the Rope). Those of you gifted with the power of language will be able to work out that the meaning of “Contre Jour” is something close to “counter day” or, in English, “night”. This is unsurprisingly where it is set - at night.
Right out of the box what we have is a strange mix of half’n’half Limbo and Cut The Rope that is apparently based on “Le Petit Prince” the book. In the metaphorical race to being a good game it fills itself with confidence and promise, but then it trips on its virtual shoelaces. You see the problem is it’s a little bit too much like Cut the Rope, in that if you try to mix it with limbo you cant really see what your doing in the more precise challenges. At all. But as a game of skill, it excels. The levels are well designed, though the three star system is a bit more like a guide to how to do the level than an extra bonus challenge. And each world brings a new mechanic into play which keeps the levels fresh and entertaining. As well as the amazing soundtrack which gives a slight 'eerie' tone to the game, without overdoing it.
All in all I think it’s a great idea that dissapointingly fell flat on its face due to some of the most basic game attributes (mainly the lighting). However, I have been told that the iPad version is better because you don't have to be as accurate with your touches. Unfortunately I feel I have to say that if you do have Cut the Rope, don’t buy this - it’s the same game, just with an eye.
